SB 128 Information

3rddegreelogo-150Dear Brother Knight,

The California Legislature is currently considering a bill, SB 128, which would allow physicians to prescribe to their patients the means by which they may legally commit suicide.

Numerous associations of health care professionals, including the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, and others, have joined California’s bishops in opposing physician assisted suicide. A recent Knights of Columbus-Marist poll found that 61% of Americans don’t want doctors prescribing or administering lethal drugs.

Supreme Knight Carl Anderson recently stated, “The American people are deeply concerned about the possible tragic consequences of this sort of legislation, and want doctors to heal and relieve pain rather than to be agents of death. It is not surprising that this legislation has failed so widely since it would sow distrust in the doctor-patient relationship. The most vulnerable — those with an incorrect diagnosis, as well as the mentally ill and depressed, and those with lower quality health insurance — would be particularly at risk.”

The Knights of Columbus was founded to help those on the margins of society. Today, those on the margins of life itself are in danger, and charity compels us to speak on their behalf. Please contact your legislators to register your opposition to SB 128. To do so, click on the following link:
